Wal4XR
Following the strategic vision outlined in the Preface, the HITT – Human Interaction Technology Transfer initiative represents Wallonia’s operational response to the technological shift toward simulation, immersive environments and advanced human–machine interaction. While Virtual Worlds and extended reality define the next layer of European digital infrastructure, HITT anchors this transformation in the region’s industrial, academic and technological fabric.
Created by a consortium of leading Walloon innovation actors - A6K (Sambrinvest), Le CLICK (UMONS), the Media Innovation & Intelligibility Lab - MiIL (UCLouvain), RTBF, and later joined by Technocité - HITT was designed as a platform for technology transfer, ecosystem orchestration and capability building. These founding partners contribute complementary strengths spanning research, engineering, digital culture, creative industries, media innovation and industrial deployment, forming a foundation that few regions in Europe can match.
The initiative structures its mission around six strategic axes that turn long-term vision into concrete results :

01
> XRConnect
Promotion & diffusion
XR Discovery
Start XR
02
> XRMarket
Support & development
03
> XR4Excellence
Research & technologies - Innovation
04
> XR4Funding
Financing and participation
05
> XR4Learning
Awarness & training
06
> XRGrowth
International & export
A strong research backbone reinforces this momentum. The Wal4XR Win4Excellence programme (2024–2028) brings together 11 doctoral researchers to develop secure, ethical and sustainable XR technologies, advanced multisensory interfaces and new forms of human–machine interaction. The programme’s valorisation committee supports intellectual property transfer and the emergence of spin-offs, ensuring that scientific excellence translates into regional impact.
HITT is equally committed to talent development and digital inclusion. Initiatives such as XR Academy allow future workers, students and professionals to acquire the skills required to navigate immersive and AI-augmented environments - a crucial component of the labour market transformation highlighted in the European agenda for Virtual Worlds.
On the international stage, HITT strengthens Wallonia’s presence in Europe through partnerships with XR4Europe, involvement in the Hannover Messe, United XR Europe, and participation in cross-border collaborative projects. These activities open doors to European funding, visibility and cooperation, reinforcing Wallonia’s role as a contributing region to the future European immersive infrastructure.
HITT members join their forces for XR research excellence. While the WAL4XR programme initially brought together seven labs from UCLouvain, UMONS, UNamur, ULB and ULiège, other academic members have joined the HITT initiative since 2004, and joined their forces for a larger picture of XR in Wallonia/Brussels.
